The Coffee Can Out Past Cottontown

Solo Ride Country Road Story Time Food Stop Cruiser

Last evening of August I ran the Heritage northeast out past Goodlettsville and kept going until the road quit having a shoulder to speak of. Out toward Cottontown, where the fence lines do more work than the pavement does and every mailbox has a name on it that has been standing there longer than the blacktop has. There is a produce stand out that way, if stand is the word for it. Piece of plywood across two sawhorses under a tin roof somebody nailed to four posts, and on the plywood a row of tomatoes, a basket of okra, and four watermelons picked that same day judging by the dirt still on them. Nobody sitting with it. No prices anywhere except one written on a paper plate. Tomatoes two dollars a basket, melons five. And a coffee can with a slot cut in the plastic lid.I shut the motor off,...

Cutting Grass at a Church Out Past Ashland City

Country Road Fog Story Time Morning Ride Cruiser

Went out early Tuesday because August in Tennessee only lends you the morning and takes the rest of it back. Ran the Heritage north on 12 with the fog still sitting in the bottoms along the river, thick enough in spots that I could see the tops of the corn and nothing under them. There is an old brick church out that way with a cemetery beside it and a gravel lot that has been packed hard by about a hundred years of Sunday parking. I have gone by it more times than I can count and never once pulled in. Tuesday there was a fella on a riding mower working his way between the stones, so I turned in.He shut the mower off when he saw the bike, which I did not ask him to do. Said he cuts it every other week from April to October and nobody pays him for it and nobody asked him to start. His people...

Two From Chicago and an Empty Tank on Gold Road

Solo Ride Desert Switchbacks Sunset Hot Weather +5

There is a stretch of the old road west of Kingman that most people drive once, take a photograph of, and never come back to. It runs out past Cool Springs and then starts climbing into the Black Mountains toward Sitgreaves Pass, and by the time you are up in the switchbacks there is no shoulder worth the name and a drop off the right side that puts rental cars down to fifteen miles an hour and keeps them there. I ride it a couple times a month, always late in the day, once the heat has let go and the light starts coming in sideways across the rock.Thursday I went out around six with no plan past Oatman and back. Stopped at Cool Springs the way I always do, that rebuilt station with the stone pillars where the tour vans line up at noon and nobody at all stops at supper time. Sat there a wh...

La rueda trasera y el chaval del taller

City Tire Change Story Time Supermoto

The Tarp in a Garage Out Past Pegram

Fog Story Time Morning Ride Classic Bike Barn Find

Sunday I was out before six, because August in Tennessee gives you about three good hours and then it starts leaning on you. Ran the Heritage west on 70 with the fog still lying in the low spots, the river bottoms doing that thing where the whole world is white up to your knees and clear above it.Out past Pegram somebody had wired a cardboard sign to a fence post. ESTATE SALE, hand lettered, arrow pointing up a gravel drive. It was a quarter past seven and no sale starts at a quarter past seven, but the garage door was up and a light was on, so I turned in.A woman in her seventies was sorting her husband's tools onto folding tables, price stickers on a few of them and not on most. He had been gone four months. She said it plain, the way people do once they have had to say it enough times. ...

Отидох да видя един мотор в Асеновград

Tips Story Time Beginner

Counting Cars at a Crossing Outside Lebanon

Solo Ride Country Road Sunset Story Time Cruiser

Wednesday evening I ran the Heritage east out past Mount Juliet, out where the subdivisions finally give up and the road goes back to being a road. No plan to it. I just wanted to be somewhere the light could get all the way to the ground.About ten miles short of Lebanon the crossing arms came down on me. Little two lane, no shoulder, corn on one side and a hay field on the other, and here comes a freight out of the west taking its own sweet time about it. I shut the motor off, which I don't usually do, and put a boot down. You forget how long a train is until you are sitting in front of one with nothing else to do. I got to counting cars and lost the number somewhere in the hoppers. Grain, tankers, a long string of container flats with names on them from ports I will never see. The whole t...

Waiting Out the Rain at a Feed Store

Country Road Rain Story Time Cruiser

July storm came up fast out past Franklin yesterday evening, sky going green-black over the fields quicker than the radio said it would. I know better than to argue with Tennessee weather, so I pulled the Heritage under the awning of an old feed store that's been closed since before I had gray in my beard.Sat there on the step watching the rain come down sideways, thunder rolling off the hills like a freight train with no schedule. Bike ticking beside me, both of us dry enough and in no hurry. After a while an old boy in a pickup pulled in to wait it out same as me. We talked bikes and hay prices through his rolled-down window without ever learning each other's names. That's about the purest kind of conversation there is.Rain quit like somebody turned a tap. Steam coming up off the blacktop...
