The Coffee Can Out Past Cottontown

Solo Ride Country Road Story Time Food Stop Cruiser

Last evening of August I ran the Heritage northeast out past Goodlettsville and kept going until the road quit having a shoulder to speak of. Out toward Cottontown, where the fence lines do more work than the pavement does and every mailbox has a name on it that has been standing there longer than the blacktop has. There is a produce stand out that way, if stand is the word for it. Piece of plywood across two sawhorses under a tin roof somebody nailed to four posts, and on the plywood a row of tomatoes, a basket of okra, and four watermelons picked that same day judging by the dirt still on them. Nobody sitting with it. No prices anywhere except one written on a paper plate. Tomatoes two dollars a basket, melons five. And a coffee can with a slot cut in the plastic lid.I shut the motor off,...

Cutting Grass at a Church Out Past Ashland City

Country Road Fog Story Time Morning Ride Cruiser

Went out early Tuesday because August in Tennessee only lends you the morning and takes the rest of it back. Ran the Heritage north on 12 with the fog still sitting in the bottoms along the river, thick enough in spots that I could see the tops of the corn and nothing under them. There is an old brick church out that way with a cemetery beside it and a gravel lot that has been packed hard by about a hundred years of Sunday parking. I have gone by it more times than I can count and never once pulled in. Tuesday there was a fella on a riding mower working his way between the stones, so I turned in.He shut the mower off when he saw the bike, which I did not ask him to do. Said he cuts it every other week from April to October and nobody pays him for it and nobody asked him to start. His people...

Woensdagavond door de Botlek

Daily Ride Solo Ride City Sunset Summer +1

Country Road Twisties Summer Weekend Cruiser

Jeder hier in Dรผsseldorf fรคhrt irgendwann am Wochenende ins Bergische.

Counting Cars at a Crossing Outside Lebanon

Solo Ride Country Road Sunset Story Time Cruiser

Wednesday evening I ran the Heritage east out past Mount Juliet, out where the subdivisions finally give up and the road goes back to being a road. No plan to it. I just wanted to be somewhere the light could get all the way to the ground.About ten miles short of Lebanon the crossing arms came down on me. Little two lane, no shoulder, corn on one side and a hay field on the other, and here comes a freight out of the west taking its own sweet time about it. I shut the motor off, which I don't usually do, and put a boot down. You forget how long a train is until you are sitting in front of one with nothing else to do. I got to counting cars and lost the number somewhere in the hoppers. Grain, tankers, a long string of container flats with names on them from ports I will never see. The whole t...

The Auction Barn at College Grove

Solo Ride Country Road Sunset Summer Cruiser

Friday evening I took the Heritage southeast for a change, down through Triune and out toward College Grove. That road quits pretending it has anywhere to be about the time the last stoplight falls behind you, and after that it is fence line and hayfields and whatever the light feels like doing.Somebody had cut hay that afternoon and the whole valley smelled like it. The rolls were still sitting out there throwing shadows twice as long as they were. I rode slow on purpose. No sense hurrying through the one part of the week that isn't asking anything of you.Pulled in at an old auction barn where a few trucks were parked with the doors open, sale long finished but nobody in a hurry to leave. Two fellas on a tailgate arguing about rain that's supposed to come Sunday. One of them looked the He...

Nothing Out Past Yucca But the Road

Night Ride Highway Cruiser Meditation on Wheels

Rode west past Yucca last night, nothing out there but the highway and the outline of the hills going darker by the minute. No traffic, no lights, just the Glide headlamp cutting a straight line through it.Didn't stop for long, just long enough to kill the engine and listen to it tick in the quiet. Some nights the desert doesn't ask anything of you, it just lets you sit there a while before you ride home.

Waiting Out the Rain at a Feed Store

Country Road Rain Story Time Cruiser

July storm came up fast out past Franklin yesterday evening, sky going green-black over the fields quicker than the radio said it would. I know better than to argue with Tennessee weather, so I pulled the Heritage under the awning of an old feed store that's been closed since before I had gray in my beard.Sat there on the step watching the rain come down sideways, thunder rolling off the hills like a freight train with no schedule. Bike ticking beside me, both of us dry enough and in no hurry. After a while an old boy in a pickup pulled in to wait it out same as me. We talked bikes and hay prices through his rolled-down window without ever learning each other's names. That's about the purest kind of conversation there is.Rain quit like somebody turned a tap. Steam coming up off the blacktop...

The Man with the Shovelhead

Highway Food Stop Cruiser Riding Buddies

Same diner out past Franklin I mentioned the other night. What I didn't mention was the '78 Shovelhead parked out front, oil spot under it like a signature, because that one deserves more than a footnote.Corner booth, denim vest gone soft as an old dollar bill, black coffee, no phone anywhere in sight. Name was Earl. Been riding that same Shovel since Carter was in office. We got to talking the way riders do, which is to say about everything and nothing. Carburetors, ex-wives, which stretch of 96 has the worst crosswind. He said a bike you keep for forty-some years stops being a machine. More like an old dog that outlived every promise the vet ever made. You don't keep it because it's reliable. You keep it because it knows you.We rolled out together as far as the Leiper's Fork turnoff. That...

Night Ride City Cruiser

Sundown on the Trace, Again

Road Trip Food Stop Golden Hour Cruiser

Took the Heritage out on the Trace again last evening, same stretch past Loveless heading south, chasing that low orange light through the trees before it dropped behind the ridge.Pulled off at a gravel turnout where an old farmer was loading hay onto a flatbed truck. He looked at the bike, nodded once, and said that thing sounds about right. Didn't need to say much more than that.Rolled back into town after dark with the headlight cutting through bugs and moths, stopped one more time for coffee at a place that's been open since before I was born. Some rides don't need a destination, just the road and the sound of the motor.
