The Long Way Up Stockton Hill

Solo Ride Night Ride Desert Sunset Road Therapy

There is a road out of Kingman that most people only use to get somewhere else. Stockton Hill runs north out of town, past the last of the houses and the last of the streetlights, and then it just goes, straight and patient, up toward Dolan Springs and the Joshua trees.I took it Sunday evening with no plan beyond seeing how far the light would hold. The town quits all at once out that way. One minute there are mailboxes and a feed store, the next there is nothing but creosote and the road running out ahead of you like somebody unrolled it and forgot to come back for it.The Joshua trees start about fifteen miles up. People call it a forest and it does not look like one at first, just a few of them standing off at odd angles like they wandered out and got lost. Then there are a hundred. Then...

Two From Chicago and an Empty Tank on Gold Road

Solo Ride Desert Switchbacks Sunset Hot Weather +5

There is a stretch of the old road west of Kingman that most people drive once, take a photograph of, and never come back to. It runs out past Cool Springs and then starts climbing into the Black Mountains toward Sitgreaves Pass, and by the time you are up in the switchbacks there is no shoulder worth the name and a drop off the right side that puts rental cars down to fifteen miles an hour and keeps them there. I ride it a couple times a month, always late in the day, once the heat has let go and the light starts coming in sideways across the rock.Thursday I went out around six with no plan past Oatman and back. Stopped at Cool Springs the way I always do, that rebuilt station with the stone pillars where the tour vans line up at noon and nobody at all stops at supper time. Sat there a wh...

Woensdagavond door de Botlek

Daily Ride Solo Ride City Sunset Summer +1

Counting Cars at a Crossing Outside Lebanon

Solo Ride Country Road Sunset Story Time Cruiser

Wednesday evening I ran the Heritage east out past Mount Juliet, out where the subdivisions finally give up and the road goes back to being a road. No plan to it. I just wanted to be somewhere the light could get all the way to the ground.About ten miles short of Lebanon the crossing arms came down on me. Little two lane, no shoulder, corn on one side and a hay field on the other, and here comes a freight out of the west taking its own sweet time about it. I shut the motor off, which I don't usually do, and put a boot down. You forget how long a train is until you are sitting in front of one with nothing else to do. I got to counting cars and lost the number somewhere in the hoppers. Grain, tankers, a long string of container flats with names on them from ports I will never see. The whole t...

The Auction Barn at College Grove

Solo Ride Country Road Sunset Summer Cruiser

Friday evening I took the Heritage southeast for a change, down through Triune and out toward College Grove. That road quits pretending it has anywhere to be about the time the last stoplight falls behind you, and after that it is fence line and hayfields and whatever the light feels like doing.Somebody had cut hay that afternoon and the whole valley smelled like it. The rolls were still sitting out there throwing shadows twice as long as they were. I rode slow on purpose. No sense hurrying through the one part of the week that isn't asking anything of you.Pulled in at an old auction barn where a few trucks were parked with the doors open, sale long finished but nobody in a hurry to leave. Two fellas on a tailgate arguing about rain that's supposed to come Sunday. One of them looked the He...

Sunset run down I-30

City Sunset Bagger Freedom

Took the CVO out tonight right as the sun started dropping behind the skyline, that cherry red paint catching every bit of light on the way down. Rolled out of Dallas on I-30 with the windows downtown lighting up in the mirrors.Pulled off at a gas station out past Grand Prairie just to hear the 117 idle in the quiet. Some guy in a pickup rolled his window down just to say the paint looked like it belonged on a fire truck. Told him fire trucks wish they looked this good.Rode back into town with the skyline lit up full orange, engine loud enough I didn't need the radio. Texas nights were made for rides like this.

Sunset Ritual

Sunset Scenic View

Reckon there's no better way to end a day than parked up at Burleigh Heads watching the sun drop into the hinterland behind ya. Got there yesterday arvo around half five, backed the Ninja into the grass near the lookout, and just sat on the tank for a solid twenty minutes doing absolutely nothing. Bloke next to me with a fishing rod gave me a nod like he understood exactly what was going on. No words needed. The ride down from Brissie was mint - took the M1 to Nerang then cut through the back roads past Mudgeeraba. There's this one stretch where the road dips through a patch of rainforest and the temperature drops like five degrees instantly. You come out the other side and bang, there's the ocean. Gets me every single time, even after living here three years.Stayed till the sky went full ...

Sunset Rider

Sunset Scenic View

Gates Pass at sunset is a religious experience and I will die on this hill. Literally - it's a hill, and I've almost died on it twice because I was staring at the sky instead of the road. But when you come around that last curve heading west and the entire Tucson valley opens up below you, painted in oranges and purples that don't look real, with saguaros standing there like they've been watching sunsets since before humans existed - yeah, man. Church ain't got nothing on this.I usually head out from midtown around five, cut through the Starr Pass neighborhood, and take the winding road up slow. The Sportster likes this road. Low speed, tight turns, good excuse to lean into those ape hangers and pretend I know what I'm doing. There's a pullout at the top where the hang glider guys launch...

Golden Hour

Sunset Scenic View

There's a road outside of Stanley that goes absolutely nowhere and that's exactly why I ride it. No destination, no ETA, no Google Maps voice telling me to make a legal U-turn. Just two lanes of cracked asphalt cutting through fields so green they hurt your eyes, with the Sawtooths sitting there on the horizon looking like God got dramatic with the landscape tools. I take this road at least once a week from May through October, and every single time it resets something in my brain.Yesterday was one of those golden hour rides where everything conspires to be perfect. Left Boise around four, took the 21 north past Lucky Peak, and by the time I hit Lowman the light was doing that thing where it comes through the ponderosas in slanted beams and the whole forest looks like a cathedral. Pulled o...
