Neue Batterie, alte Schulden am Fischmarkt

City Maintenance Electronics Food Stop Autumn +3

Catfish at a Fire Hall Out Past Chapel Hill

Country Road Sunset Story Time Food Stop Cruiser +1

Friday evening I took the Heritage south on 31A, down through Nolensville and past Triune where the new houses finally give out, and kept on toward Chapel Hill with the sun getting low on my right. No plan to it past the road itself.About the time the fence lines got honest again I smelled grease, and then I saw the sign. Hand painted on plywood, leaned on a sawhorse at a crossroads: FISH FRY TONITE, with an arrow. I followed it to a cinderblock fire hall with both bay doors rolled up and the trucks parked out in the grass to make room. Three big cast iron kettles going out back on propane, and a line of folks that ran out past the flagpole.Plate was catfish, hushpuppies, white beans and slaw, twelve dollars, and the money went in a coffee can marked for new turnout gear. Nobody made chang...

Brisket in Lockhart and the Long Way Home

Solo Ride Country Road Food Stop Autumn Cruiser

First Saturday of October and the forecast finally had a number under ninety in it, so I rode down to Lockhart for lunch. It is barely thirty miles from my place if you take 183 straight down, which is exactly why I did not. Went east first on the back roads past the airport and came into town from the north with the sun behind me.Parked on the courthouse square. That courthouse is a big old stone thing with a clock tower, and every time I see it I forget it is not a movie set. Walked over to Smitty's, the one where you come in through the back and walk right past the fire on the floor of the pit room. Smoke in your eyes, heat on your shins, and they cut your brisket onto butcher paper while you watch. Half a pound of fatty, a sausage ring, crackers and a slice of onion. You eat it with yo...

The Sorghum Pan Out Past Lafayette

Solo Ride Country Road Story Time Food Stop Autumn +2

Saturday I got the Heritage out early and ran northeast on 31E, up through Gallatin and Westmoreland toward the Kentucky line, with no plan past finding a road I had not been on. Fog was lying in the creek bottoms and the first of the sumac had gone red along the fence rows. Up around Lafayette the land starts rolling hard and the farms get smaller, and every third mailbox has a hand painted sign under it for eggs or honey or firewood. One of those signs said SORGHUM MAKING TODAY, with an arrow down a gravel lane. I have never once in my life seen sorghum made, so I eased the Heritage down that gravel at about a walking pace and parked her by a shed where a dozen pickups already were. They had a cane press going behind the shed, an old green iron thing run off a belt from a tractor, and two ...

The Coffee Can Out Past Cottontown

Solo Ride Country Road Story Time Food Stop Cruiser

Last evening of August I ran the Heritage northeast out past Goodlettsville and kept going until the road quit having a shoulder to speak of. Out toward Cottontown, where the fence lines do more work than the pavement does and every mailbox has a name on it that has been standing there longer than the blacktop has. There is a produce stand out that way, if stand is the word for it. Piece of plywood across two sawhorses under a tin roof somebody nailed to four posts, and on the plywood a row of tomatoes, a basket of okra, and four watermelons picked that same day judging by the dirt still on them. Nobody sitting with it. No prices anywhere except one written on a paper plate. Tomatoes two dollars a basket, melons five. And a coffee can with a slot cut in the plastic lid.I shut the motor off,...

Serpentine prije autobusa

Solo Ride Mountain Pass Coastal Road Switchbacks Sunrise +5

The Man with the Shovelhead

Highway Food Stop Cruiser Riding Buddies

Same diner out past Franklin I mentioned the other night. What I didn't mention was the '78 Shovelhead parked out front, oil spot under it like a signature, because that one deserves more than a footnote.Corner booth, denim vest gone soft as an old dollar bill, black coffee, no phone anywhere in sight. Name was Earl. Been riding that same Shovel since Carter was in office. We got to talking the way riders do, which is to say about everything and nothing. Carburetors, ex-wives, which stretch of 96 has the worst crosswind. He said a bike you keep for forty-some years stops being a machine. More like an old dog that outlived every promise the vet ever made. You don't keep it because it's reliable. You keep it because it knows you.We rolled out together as far as the Leiper's Fork turnoff. That...

Sundown on the Trace, Again

Road Trip Food Stop Golden Hour Cruiser

Took the Heritage out on the Trace again last evening, same stretch past Loveless heading south, chasing that low orange light through the trees before it dropped behind the ridge.Pulled off at a gravel turnout where an old farmer was loading hay onto a flatbed truck. He looked at the bike, nodded once, and said that thing sounds about right. Didn't need to say much more than that.Rolled back into town after dark with the headlight cutting through bugs and moths, stopped one more time for coffee at a place that's been open since before I was born. Some rides don't need a destination, just the road and the sound of the motor.
