Sunset Rider

Gates Pass at sunset is a religious experience and I will die on this hill. Literally - it's a hill, and I've almost died on it twice because I was staring at the sky instead of the road. But when you come around that last curve heading west and the entire Tucson valley opens up below you, painted in oranges and purples that don't look real, with saguaros standing there like they've been watching sunsets since before humans existed - yeah, man. Church ain't got nothing on this.

I usually head out from midtown around five, cut through the Starr Pass neighborhood, and take the winding road up slow. The Sportster likes this road. Low speed, tight turns, good excuse to lean into those ape hangers and pretend I know what I'm doing. There's a pullout at the top where the hang glider guys launch from, and if you time it right you get maybe fifteen minutes of golden hour where every single thing the light touches looks like a postcard. The saguaros throw these long shadows across the desert floor and the Catalinas go pink in the distance. Tucson doesn't get enough credit for being one of the most beautiful places in this country.

The ride back in the dark is its own thing entirely. Desert cools down fast once the sun drops, and by the time you're back on Speedway it's hoodie weather. Smells change too - creosote after the heat breaks, that specific Sonoran desert smell that people from here know and can't ever quite describe to people who aren't. I've done this ride probably two hundred times and it hasn't gotten old once. People keep asking when I'm gonna move somewhere with better job opportunities. Buddy, show me a sunset like Gates Pass and we'll talk.
