Somewhere past Amarillo the highway stops being a road and starts being a conversation. The Road Glide hums at 2,100 RPM like she's telling me a story of her own, and I swear the wind has a different accent out here - dry, old, patient. I passed a rusted gas station with a sign that said "LAST CHANCE" and I thought, yeah, that's the whole point.
You don't ride Route 66 to get somewhere. You ride it to stop being somewhere. My phone died around Tucumcari and I didn't care. The sun was doing that thing where it paints the whole sky in shades of copper and bruise-purple, and I just rolled the throttle a little more and let the engine do the thinking.
Pulled into a motel with a neon cactus on the sign. The parking lot was empty except for one other bike - a beat-up Sportster with Texas plates. Never met the rider but I left a nod on the seat. That's the language out here.
