Golden Hour

prieš 2 mėn.

There's a road outside of Stanley that goes absolutely nowhere and that's exactly why I ride it. No destination, no ETA, no Google Maps voice telling me to make a legal U-turn. Just two lanes of cracked asphalt cutting through fields so green they hurt your eyes, with the Sawtooths sitting there on the horizon looking like God got dramatic with the landscape tools. I take this road at least once a week from May through October, and every single time it resets something in my brain.

Yesterday was one of those golden hour rides where everything conspires to be perfect. Left Boise around four, took the 21 north past Lucky Peak, and by the time I hit Lowman the light was doing that thing where it comes through the ponderosas in slanted beams and the whole forest looks like a cathedral. Pulled over at a turnout above the South Fork and just sat on the bike for a while. A doe and two fawns were standing in the river about fifty yards downstream, completely unbothered by me or my exhaust note. Idaho doesn't show off. It just quietly exists and lets you find it.

Rode home under a sky that went from gold to pink to deep purple in about forty minutes. No streetlights once you're past Idaho City, just your headlight and the stars coming out one by one. Passed a total of six cars in two hours. My friends in California think I'm crazy for living out here, but none of them have ever seen the Milky Way reflected in a river while straddling a warm engine on a Tuesday evening. Their loss.
