Hualapai Mountain Road, Where the Desert Quits

Fourteen miles out of town the desert quits. That is the only way I have ever been able to explain Hualapai Mountain Road to anybody who has not been up it. You leave Kingman at the light by the tracks with the heat still coming up off the asphalt, you start climbing, and somewhere around five thousand feet the creosote gives out and there are pines standing where no pine has any business standing. Same county. Same tank of gas. Twenty minutes.I went up late in the day with the light already going long across the valley. The Glide is not built for that road and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Avgust u Kotoru je lijep za one koji dođu na sedam dana. Za nas koji ovdje živimo to je mjesec kad se do grada ne može, kad kruzer istrese tri hiljade ljudi u devet ujutru i kad ti je magistrala od Risna do Kotora jedna duga kolona koja se ne miče. Zato sam u subotu ustao u pet i po, popio kafu na nogama i izašao dok je zaliv još bio siv.Serpentine iznad Kotora, onih dvadeset pet krivina što se penju prema Njegušima, u pola šest ujutru pripadaju samo tebi. Nema autobusa, nema iznajmljenih buggyja, nema nikoga ko stane nasred krivine da se slika. DR-ka na tome radi u drugoj i trećoj i ne traži ništa više od toga. There is a stretch of the old road west of Kingman that most people drive once, take a photograph of, and never come back to. It runs out past Cool Springs and then starts climbing into the Black Mountains toward Sitgreaves Pass, and by the time you are up in the switchbacks there is no shoulder worth the name and a drop off the right side that puts rental cars down to fifteen miles an hour and keeps them there. I ride it a couple times a month, always late in the day, once the heat has let go and the light starts coming in sideways across the rock.Thursday I went out around six with no plan past Oatman and back. Domingo, la Forty y otra vez sin gasolina

City Hot Weather Weekend Riding Buddies

Domingo por la manana, plan sencillo con dos colegas: cuatro curvas hacia El Saler y vuelta para comer. La Forty ya sabe el percal, antes de salir de Valencia parada obligada en la gasolinera de siempre.Uno de los colegas se rio porque su moto aguanta el doble de kilometros con el deposito lleno. Le dije que la mia no necesita tanto, total el plan siempre es corto.Vuelta tranquila, sol ya fuerte a esa hora, y parada otra vez antes de casa. Domingo perfecto para no complicarse la vida.

Domenica sera e ancora sto caldo che non molla da settimane, sono uscito lo stesso col Monster giusto per sentire un po' d'aria mentre la citta si svuota piano piano verso le nove.Giro veloce fino ai Navigli, gente seduta fuori con lo spritz ma io preferisco il motore acceso e il vento, anche se e caldo pure quello onestamente.Torno verso casa che sono quasi le dieci e mezza e Milano sembra ancora addormentata per il caldo, il Monster tira sempre bene comunque.

Non ce la facevo piu con questo caldo assurdo, ho preso le chiavi verso le undici e sono uscito solo per sentire un po' d'aria in faccia, il Monster che parte al primo colpo come sempre.Corso Sempione deserto, giu fino ai Navigli dove pero stavolta era pieno di gente con lo spritz in mano nonostante l'ora tarda, mi sono fermato un attimo a guardarli passare mentre il motore ticchettava.Poi su per Porta Genova e ancora un giro senza meta, tanto sapevo gia che a casa non avrei dormito comunque con questo caldo, meglio in sella che sotto il ventilatore che gira aria calda e basta.
